Terms of use

These are the rules of using Compani. We’ve kept them as plain as we can. If you create an account or use the app, you agree to them. Compani is currently in alpha — early, experimental software we offer free of charge while we learn from the first families using it. Expect rough edges.

Compani is not a medical device. It is a companion voice for people living with dementia and the carers who love them. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace medical care, professional therapy, or human supervision.

Who can use Compani

You must be at least 18 to create a carer account. You set up Compani on behalf of a loved one (the “patient”) and you confirm that you have their consent to do so — or, if their capacity to consent is impaired, that you have the legal authority to act on their behalf (for example, an enduring power of attorney, guardianship, or equivalent).

You are responsible for what you tell Compani about the patient and what you allow Compani to discuss with them.

What Compani does

  • Lets the patient have a spoken conversation with our AI companion (“Jon”) on a paired device.
  • Remembers what you’ve told her about the patient’s life, family, and routine.
  • Optionally connects to Google Calendar (so Jon can mention upcoming events) and Spotify (so she can play music on request).
  • Sends you a short daily summary of how the day went.

What Compani is not

  • Not medical advice. Anything Jon says is for companionship. Do not rely on her for clinical decisions, medication management, or emergency response.
  • Not a monitoring service. Compani is not watched by a human in real time and does not replace supervision, care, or emergency response.
  • Not infallible. Jon is an AI. She can be confidently wrong. If she says something that contradicts what you know to be true, trust your own knowledge.

Your account

Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for activity under your account. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has accessed it.

How you may use Compani

You agree not to:

  • Use Compani to harass, deceive, or harm anyone.
  • Use Compani for someone who hasn’t consented to its use, or who you don’t have authority to set it up for.
  • Try to bypass safety features, jailbreak Jon, or extract her underlying instructions.
  • Scrape, copy, or re-use Compani’s code or content for commercial purposes.
  • Use Compani to violate any law that applies to you or the patient.

Cost

Compani is currently free while we’re in early access. If we introduce paid plans, we’ll tell you well in advance and never charge you without your explicit agreement.

Service availability

We do our best to keep Compani available, but we can’t promise it will be online every minute. The voice loop depends on third parties (notably ElevenLabs for the live voice and OpenAI for Jon’s replies). Outages happen. Compani should never be the only safety net for a vulnerable person.

Changes to the service

We’ll keep improving Jon. That means features may be added, removed, or changed. If a change materially affects how Compani works for you, we’ll do our best to give you notice.

Ending your use

You can stop using Compani at any time and delete your account from the carer dashboard. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, particularly anything that risks the safety of a patient.

Liability

We’ll work hard to make Compani safe and useful, but to the maximum extent permitted by law, Compani is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app. In particular, we are not responsible for medical, health, or care outcomes — those remain the responsibility of the patient’s care team.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for anything that cannot lawfully be limited (such as gross negligence or fraud).

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we’ll notify you by email and update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction unless your local consumer law gives you stronger rights.
